Green Detox Topper & Spread
Introduction:
This recipe promotes heavy metal detoxification while simultaneously balancing healthy fats and antioxidants to support overall metabolic function and cellular protection.
And the best part? This recipe benefits both you and your dog! You can share :)
By combining powerful detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting ingredients, it aids in liver function, improves digestion, and promotes the removal of harmful toxins and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, aluminum, and arsenic from both you and your dog’s system. Additionally, it offers broader wellness benefits that contribute to overall detoxification and enhanced vitality.
The 2:1 ratio of parsley to cilantro is often used because parsley, being milder in flavor and more nutrient-dense in certain vitamins (like vitamin C and K), can offer a more well-rounded detoxification benefit when combined with cilantro, which has strong but more specific chelating properties for heavy metals.
Using parsley in a higher ratio also helps balance cilantro's more intense taste, making the blend more palatable. Additionally, parsley provides broader antioxidant, kidney-support, and anti-inflammatory benefits, which complement cilantro's more targeted role in mobilizing and removing heavy metals from the body. This ratio ensures a balanced approach to detoxification, supporting the liver and kidneys while offering a more comprehensive health benefit.
That said, the ratio could be adjusted to 1:1 if the focus is solely on cilantro’s chelating effects for heavy metal detox, as both herbs have their own unique properties that contribute to detoxification in different ways. Ultimately, the choice between 2:1 and 1:1 depends on the broader goals of the recipe—whether you're aiming for a more balanced, general detox or a stronger heavy metal focus.
Benefits and Highlights
Heavy Metal Detox: Cilantro and parsley are known for their ability to bind and support the elimination of heavy metals from the body.
Antioxidant Support: The high antioxidant content from parsley, cilantro, and lemon juice helps neutralize free radicals, promoting cellular protection and overall detoxification.
Liver and Kidney Support: Garlic and lemon juice promote liver function, aiding in the detoxification process. Parsley also supports kidney function, promoting toxin removal through urination.
Gut Health and Waste Removal: Ground chia seeds absorb moisture and expand after resting in the mixture. This helps improve bowel regularity by adding bulk to stool, facilitating the physical elimination of toxins, and aiding digestion.
Inflammation Reduction: Ginger and garlic provide strong anti-inflammatory properties that support digestive health and the immune system, aiding in both detoxification and inflammation management.
Fat and Nutrient Absorption: Coconut oil enhances the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients and phytonutrients, helping your dog get the most out of this detox recipe.
THE RECIPE
Here comes the fun part!
Ingredients:
1 cup fresh organic parsley
1/2 cup fresh organic cilantro
1.5 tbsp ground organic chia seeds
3 tsp grated organic ginger (preferably freshly grated or ground)
1 clove organic garlic
1 organic lemon
*1 tbsp organic cold-pressed coconut oil (room temperature) / or 1 tbsp organic cold pressed olive oil
*read below on why and when choosing one over the other one
Ingredients Breakdown:
Parsley:
Chlorophyll and Antioxidants: Binds toxins and helps eliminate them while reducing oxidative stress.
Detoxification: Promotes kidney function, supporting toxin elimination.
Cilantro:
Chelating Agent: Binds heavy metals and aids in their removal via urine, promoting liver and kidney health.
Ground Chia Seeds:
Omega-3s: Provides anti-inflammatory benefits, supporting cardiovascular and digestive health.
Absorptive Properties: Once ground and mixed with the other ingredients, chia seeds absorb liquid, expanding in the mixture. This process helps add bulk to stool and facilitates smoother digestion.
Ginger:
Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation and promotes digestive health by enhancing gastric motility.
Garlic:
Allicin Production: Supports immune function and liver detox by enhancing the body’s ability to detoxify through sulfur compounds.
Lemon Juice:
Vitamin C and Antioxidants: Supports liver detoxification and provides preservative properties that prolong the shelf life of the recipe.
Coconut Oil:
Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs): Provides quick energy and enhances the absorption of the phytonutrients in parsley and cilantro.
Olive Oil:
Rich in Polyphenols and Monounsaturated Fats: Supports liver detoxification, reduces oxidative stress, and enhances the absorption of fat-soluble antioxidants in the recipe’s herbs.
Coconut Oil vs. Olive Oil in Heavy Metal Detox
🥥 Coconut Oil: Pros & Considerations
Benefits:
Rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) – rapidly absorbed, used for energy, may support liver function
Contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties
Well-tolerated by most dogs, often used in canine diets in small amounts
May support gut health, which indirectly supports detoxification via microbiome balance
Concerns:
Not a chelator, doesn’t bind heavy metals
In excess, may cause loose stool in dogs or humans unaccustomed to it
Saturated fat-heavy, which may be a concern for humans with metabolic or cardiovascular issues
Lacks polyphenols and antioxidants that support long-term detox or inflammation reduction
🫒 Olive Oil: Pros & Considerations
Benefits:
High in monounsaturated fats, great for cardiovascular health
Rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, which reduce oxidative stress from mobilized heavy metals
Supports liver function through anti-inflammatory action
Helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins and phytonutrients in parsley/cilantro
Also safe for dogs (in moderation) and used in some natural pet diets
Concerns:
Less “metabolically activating” than coconut oil (no MCTs)
May go rancid faster than coconut oil, especially if exposed to heat or light
Less antimicrobial activity
| Factor | Coconut Oil | Olive Oil |
|---|---|---|
| Liver Support | Moderate (via MCTs) | High (via polyphenols) |
| Gut Support | Strong (antimicrobial, MCTs) | Moderate |
| Heavy Metal Chelation | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Antioxidant Support | Low | High |
| Dog-Safe | Yes (small amount) | Yes (small amount) |
| Flavor Impact (Raw Use) | Sweet, tropical | Earthy, neutral |
My Recommendation:
👉 If your focus is metabolism, energy, gut health, or you want a very gentle liver nudge (especially if using raw or chilled), stick with coconut oil.
👉 If your focus is oxidative stress reduction, antioxidant synergy, and liver detox, or you're aiming for a more medicinal/herbal profile, go with extra virgin olive oil.
👉 If both you and your dog are healthy individuals with no metabolic or cardiovascular issue, you can also do a blend: e.g., ½ tsp olive oil + ½ tsp coconut oil - to get the antimicrobial/gut benefits from coconut while still leveraging the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory profile of olive oil.
Instructions:
Cut off the bottom more fibrous stock from parsley and cilantro, chop it to facilitate insertion in the blender.
Add in the blender a 1.5 inch cube of fresh peeled ginger or 3tsp of organic ground ginger.
Add the chia seeds, the garlic clove, and the coconut oil.
Squeeze one juicy organic lemon in the blender
Blend at a low speed! You don’t want to emulsify the salsa, you need to able to still detect some leaf structure
Transfer to an airtight container
Let the mixture rest in the fridge for 1 hour. This allows the chia seeds to absorb moisture and expand, creating a gel-like consistency.
Dosage & DURATION:
Serving Suggestion:
Small dogs (15-30 lbs): 1 tsp per day.
Medium dogs (30-60 lbs): 1-2 tsp per day.
Large dogs (60+ lbs): 2-3 tsp per day.
Humans: No limits
Duration:
Heavy metal detoxification is a gradual process. Ingredients like cilantro, chlorella, parsley, and psyllium work synergistically over an extended period (3-4 weeks) to effectively remove toxins from the bloodstream and tissues.
For detox purposes, use daily for 2-4 weeks. Visible results may be observed after consistent use within this timeframe, but for dogs with high levels of heavy metals, prolonged use (months) may be necessary. Always consult a veterinarian for long-term detox protocols.
Cautionary Note:
This recipe is designed to deliver a range of detoxifying benefits; however, it is relatively high in oxalates due primarily to the generous amount of parsley (and to a lesser extent, cilantro). Dogs with a history of or a predisposition to oxalate-based kidney stones (such as calcium oxalate stones) may experience adverse effects from the high oxalate content, which could outweigh the intended benefits of the detox regimen.
In addition to dogs with oxalate stones, caution should also be exercised for:
Dogs with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Compromised kidney function can reduce the ability to filter out oxalates, potentially increasing the risk of stone formation or exacerbating existing kidney issues.
Dogs Prone to Urinary or Kidney Stones: Any dog with a known tendency to develop urinary tract stones or a family history of kidney stone formation should consult with a veterinarian before incorporating this recipe into their diet.
Always consult your veterinarian before introducing any new dietary regimen, especially if your dog has pre-existing kidney or urinary conditions. Adjustments or modifications to the recipe may be necessary to ensure it supports your dog's overall health without increasing the risk of stone formation.
